Futatsu Mori where Ono no Komachi and Fukakusa no Shosho rest in peace

A long time ago, the Yakunai River receded and left many islands in the region around Futatsu Mori. This region was called Yasojima, which means 80 islands in Japanese.
In the present era, almost of all of those islands have disappeared and only Futatsu Mori (twin woods) is left. It is said to be the grave of Ono no Komachi and Fukakusa no Shosho. The bigger hill is called Otoko Mori (Male Forest), which is dedicated as the resting place of Fukakusa. The lower hill is called Onna Mori (Female Forest), which is dedicated as the resting place of Ono no Komachi.
In the forests, various gods are enshrined. It is said that in the Female Forest, Benzaiten (a goddess of talent and wealth) is enshrined by Ono no Komachi’s mother, Ohmachiko. At the base of the forest, there was once a small shrine that was built by Ono no Komachi’s father, Ono no Yoshizane, who served for the lord of Dewa (present Akita and Yamagata regions), but now only its base stones remain.
