深草少将（Fukakusa no Shosho）

Fukakusa no Shosho was so in love with Ono no Komachi that he followed after her when she left Kyoto, and he came to Dewa (present Akita and Yamagata regions).
In the reply to a love letter from Fukakusa, Komachi said, “I miss the beautiful peonies that I saw when I was a child. I will return your affection if you could plant 100 peonies for me.”
At the time, Komachi was suffering from smallpox. She visited Isozaki Shrine every day to wash her face with clean fresh water from Komachi Izumi (Komachi Pond), believing that she would be cured within 100 days.
Fukakusa brought a peony to Ono no Komachi every day and put those flowers in front of the gate of the house where she lived.  This is how Momoyo Gayoi (100-day straight visits) started. However, on a heavy rainy day when Fukakusa was delivering the 100th flower to Ono no Komachi, he was swallowed by a flood and died at Oppeji Bridge.
Komachi learned that Fukakusa ignored his servants warning about the bad weather and tried to deliver the last flower to her. She grieved deeply for his death, and built a stone monument for him at Douzenji (Douzen Temple).

小町に想いを寄せていた深草少将は、京を去った小町を追って出羽に東下りしました。
そして、小町に恋文を送りますが、小町は、「小さい頃にあった芍薬の花が無くなったので百本植えてくれたらあなたの心に添いましょう。」と返事をしました。
この頃、小町は疱瘡にかかっており、磯前神社の境内に湧き出る泉で顔を洗い、百日もあれば治るだろうという一心で毎日通っていました。
一方、少将は、一日も早く小町に逢いたいと、芍薬の花を毎日届けました。これが「百日通い」の始まりです。そして、折からの大雨の中、最後の百本目を届けるため、使いの者が止めるのを振り切り自ら御返事橋まで来ましたが、橋もろとも流されて亡くなってしまいました。
少将の死を悲しんだ小町は桐善寺に石碑を建てて供養しました。
